Hertha Metals today broke ground on Hertha Chalyx, its first commercial plant, designed to produce about 10,000 metric tons a year of steel-grade and magnet-grade high-purity iron combined. Built next to Hertha's Pi100 pilot plant, Chalyx forms the first modern iron and steel innovation complex in the U.S., where Hertha will develop and scale its process for making primary iron and steel.

Hertha Metals, developer of the world's first single-step process for producing steel and high-purity iron at lower cost, has achieved iron production at 99.95% (3N5) purity, meeting the specification required by top rare earth magnet manufacturers. This makes Hertha the first U.S. company to reach this specification with fully domestic inputs, and establishes a domestic source for a material the U.S. currently imports almost entirely. The milestone comes as defense manufacturers face a January 1, 2027 deadline to reduce reliance on Chinese-origin magnets and critical materials, while U.S. industry races to qualify domestic alternatives.

On August 11th, CEO Laureen Meroueh and Hertha Metals – a domestic steel and high-purity iron producing company based out of Conroe – hosted Congressman Morgan Luttrell for a tour of Hertha Metals’ plant. During the tour, Congressman Luttrell saw Hertha’s one-step furnace in action: turning low-grade domestic ore and millscale into high-purity iron for rare earth magnets used in defense, energy, and electronics. The visit also spotlighted Hertha’s upcoming 9,000-tonne-per-year plant, set to bring 550 jobs and strengthen America’s industrial security.
